Replacing Damaged Kitchen Flooring
The damaged flooring is removed and replaced with new materials, restoring both functionality and appearance. Careful installation ensures a secure fit, improving durability and overall aesthetic appeal in the kitchen. Apologies again for the fuzzy photos.
What seemed like a harmless drip from a hanging houseplant led to unexpected flooring damage. Fortunately, spare pieces from the original installation were available, making the repair process easier and avoiding a protracted search for similar flooring materials to create replacement pieces.
The extent of the shrinkage gaps appears extraordinary, but this level of contraction is common in wood flooring that has been exposed to moisture and then subjected to very dry conditions. The dramatic difference highlights the sensitivity of wood to environmental changes, reinforcing the importance of proper moisture control in flooring maintenance. such as not letting water continually drip onto it without being cleaned up.
Steps for Repairing the Floor Section
Each flooring repair requires specific techniques, depending on the scope of damage and material involved. For this project:
Modifying the New Pieces – Some tongue flanges must be removed so the pieces drop directly into their slots rather than needing to be angled in.
Applying Adhesive – A generous amount of the correct adhesive is used to ensure secure bonding.
Placing the First Pieces – The initial replacement pieces are dropped in, then slid into position before being flange-nailed, as is customary.
Securing the Final Pieces – The last couple of pieces must be micro-pinned and glued, with a weight placed over the section until the adhesive fully sets, ensuring a firm hold.
This careful approach ensures the repaired section blends smoothly with the existing flooring, restoring both functionality and appearance.
The previous stairs were steep compared to the new ones that sported shorter risers and wider treads. This made them much easier to navigate for those with mobility issues.
The post seen near the shrubs at the top of the stairs will be matched at the bottom and the railing will be added at the same time.
A board that is the same width as the boards for the deck is added to soften the appearance where the stairs meet the deck. There is a 1" kickback on the treads and the closed riser is 1x pine. The treads are fir and have a slight slope to make water run off. Because this is a wood tread the gaps between the boards will get a high quality caulk to keep water from rotting the boards from between and below and keep the area under the stairs dry.
Another Flooring Repair is Implemented
Water from persons stepping out of the shower seeped down into the joints and caused the finished flooring to buckle and warp. Yet another water problem crops up. There is also black mold as can be seen in the upper right of this photo.
The damaged flooring gets removed, the cuts are made perfectly square if they are not already, and all the glue residue is completely scraped away and the area is thoroughly vacuumed
After it is scraped and vacuumed the area is sprayed with a chlorine solution to kill the black mold and prevent it from coming back.
The replacement pieces are installed and care is taken to make sure the adhesive is also applied to the edges of these same pieces to prevent water from penetrating into the subfloor area and creating the same problem again.
