"These two are part of a family of six sibling raccoons (sadly without their mom đ„ș) who wandered into our yard a few summers back. Despite our best efforts, the only response we got was from someone offering to âeliminateâ themâfor a fee. Instead, we fed them, and I managed to catch two in some buckets and relocate them up Bridger Canyon. The rest took their chances, crossing a nearby intersection during rush hour (miraculously unscathed!) and disappearing into a residential area. Their fate remains unknown, but we like to believe they found their way to safety."
Warped Antique Table TopâRestored to Its Former Glory
This was a smaller project I tackled the day after completing the re-scribing work at the same residence. The antique tableâs top had dried out over time, causing the wood grain to warp and curl significantly. Using a damp towel, I gradually flattened the surface over the course of a few hours. Once fully dry, I refinished it, and the result was truly stunning!
Stools Trimmed to Fit Perfectly Under the Kitchen Island
Adjusting the height of stools or chairs requires precision, but I have a technique that ensures a seamless result. The modifications are nearly undetectable, andâmost importantlyâthe stool remains stable with no wobble. A careful approach makes all the difference in achieving a clean, professional finish
Condensation Damage from Aging WindowsâA Long-Standing Issue
This rental unit had recurring condensation problems, likely due to old windows that may have also degassed over time. Itâs an issue that should have been addressed years ago, but left unattended, it contributed to visible wear and damage. Proper maintenance and timely replacements can make all the difference in preventing ongoing deterioration.
Even though it looks pretty bad, the rot had not gotten very far below the surface or down between the wood parts. This window trim can be sanded, stained and refinished (some can even be removed for this process) but the windows may need to be replaced (due to degassing and allowing ice build-up and condensation) to prevent this situation from arising yet again the next winter.
Sanding BeginsâRestoring the Natural Beauty of Oak
The transformation is underway! Years of wear, darkening, and black splotches are being erased as the oak regains its natural blonde hue. A water-based polyurethane finish will protect the wood while preserving its color. Sadly, there are no final photosâbut trust me, it turned out beautifully. My bad.đ
Restoring a Scuffed-Up Base Cabinet Side Panel
Thin veneer can be trickyâsometimes it can be refinished, but if the goal is a like-new look, replacement or overlaying is the best option. In this case, I sanded it lightly, removed as many dark marks as possible, then stained and refinished it. No after photos this time (realized that a year laterâoops!), but the end result was solid. None of the scars ran deeper than the veneer, so it cleaned up nicely.
These are rental unit rehabs, and new tenants move in every year. I donât make a habit of cold-visiting college kids out of the blue, but maybe someday Iâll be called back to remodel this unitâthen I can finally snag that updated shot
The right adhesive remover can work wonders, but caution is keyâtoo strong, and it might strip the finish or leave discoloration behind. A careful approach ensures the surface stays intact while getting rid of that stubborn residue.
After carefully removing scratches and refinishing, this pocket door seamlessly blends with the trim, bringing back its original charm. I remember this photo as an after shotâone of the rare few I have of this unit!
This narrow base wasnât properly glued or fastened, so it popped loose when furniture bumped against it. Someone tried a quick fix with a hand-driven finish screw, but when it bent over, they just left it as-is. The proper solution? Removing and reattaching it with enough fasteners (air gun driven) and glue at the joints to ensure a secure hold. A common repair, but an after photo wouldâve really shown the differenceâmaybe next time!
Bathroom Upgrade
Black mold and soap scum have taken their toll on an otherwise nice bathroom countertop, dulling its appearance. Adding to the wear, dings in the molding further detract from the overall look. A thorough cleaning and some careful refinishing could bring it back to its original charm!
Hastily installed wooden backsplashes often lead to caulk being smeared beyond its intended area. The problem? When removed, it takes the wallboard paper with it, leaving an uneven, damaged surface behind. Careful application and cleanup can prevent this, but once it happens, proper repair is needed to restore a smooth finish.
Leftover caulk can be just as problematic as smeared application, often requiring removal and touchup painting to restore a clean look. For a quality repair, nearly all of the excess material needs to be stripped away before refinishing. Careful attention to detail ensures a seamless, original-looking result.
Removing caulk from this joint requires a gentle touch and the right tools. A variety of putty knivesâeach with different thicknesses and flexibilitiesâhelps ensure a clean removal without damaging surrounding surfaces. Precision is key to achieving a smooth, professional finish
This repair was completed without removing the backsplash, ensuring a seamless fix while keeping the surrounding structure intact. With sanding and careful masking done, it's prepped for the final finish.
The repair is complete, and the surface is finishedânow just waiting for the final caulk application. And yes, another case of missing an after photo!
